Description: A regular short story about deception. My friend came up with the main plot but I wrote most of the whole concept.
The summer of 2000 was when Jack and his wife Angela moved into our neighborhood. They appeared to be a nice couple very much in love. Angela seemed to be around her 30s and Jack in his late 40s. They both meet in high school, which ironically enough was the same high school I had attended. Angela worked as a lawyer and her husband as a farmer; both doing well for themselves.
Angela was a materialistic person, which you could tell by the expensive cars she loved to drive. She once told me how everything she owned had to be named brand and expensive to be worth her time. It was oddly enough that her husband was the complete opposite from her. Jack was a laid back man; wearing the same shoes everyday and driving an old beat-up van. Everyday I could hear the Angelia screaming at her husband, bossing him up and down the house. It was pretty obvious that Angela could care less about her husband.
Angela once confessed to me that she found her husband very predictable. Every time he went to do something, she could already tell exactly how he was going to go about it. His daily routine was the same, day in and day out. For about some time now it has stopped bothering her, since he stopped caring about him long ago. Angela told me that their marriage had changed in throughout the years. It was once full of love and compassion and now there was now of it. There was once a time when Angela thought that their marriage was pretty much unbreakable, but now the couple seemed to be completely driven apart.
At first Angela seemed not to care about her husband, but as time went on I noticed her attitude start to change. Angela started noticing changes in her husband and she realized that she did not want someone to take her place. The sudden changes in Jack made her suspicious and curious about his doings. Jack’s daily routine that she found predictable was no more, and he was even arriving home late. Angela needed to know what was going on with her husband, so she decided to follow him the next day.
The very next day when Jack left home to go to work Angela started to follow him. Angela was terrified of what she could find out, but she needed to know. She saw her husband pull up a house, so she decided to stake him out from the gas station across the street. As she pretended to get some gas she could clearly see her husband. Jack stepped out from his van and went up to knock on the front door. What came next was something Angela could have never predicted in a million years. A beautiful young girl stepped out from inside the house, and the girl appeared to be no more then 18 years old.
After some time Jack and the young girl went inside his van driving off. As Jack was driving off he noticed a car resembling his wives at the gas station, but he quickly brushed those thoughts away. Jack could not help but think if that could have been his wife in that gas station. He tried to dismiss those thoughts by convincing himself that in order for Angela to do that she would actually have to care about him. Still the thought of her knowing made him very nervous and scared of losing her. But she had seen it all and now Angela was making her way back to wait for him.
While Angela waited for him she decided to clean the house and make a lovely dinner. When Jack arrived home later that night he found it completely strange for the house to be spotless. He could tell something was right and he feared that his wife had found out his little secret. As he walked into the living he saw that Angela was quietly sitting on the couch filing her nails. When Jack walked in Angela casually looked up and asked how his day was. Jack could do nothing but smile nervously replying that he had had a good day. With a grin Angela looked him in the eyes and told him she was glad that he had a good day with that young girl. Jack went pale as a ghost, trying to play it off as if the girl was an old friend. Angela laughed and asked how old of a friend could she possibly be if she looks eighteen. That was then Jack knew that he had been caught and confessed his wife the truth.
After hearing everything Jack had to say, Angela packed up her bags and left. Before leaving she told Jack that although she looked uncaring she never thought he would do this to her. Just like that because of a simple deception Jack lost his wife. Angela moved back to New Jersey where she is trying to put her life back together. Last I heard of Jack, he sold the house and now lives alone.
So what’s the moral of the story, you ask? It is to simply not try and deceive others because the truth always comes out. You could argue that the moral is to be more careful so you do not get caught cheating, but that is up to you.
